June 2024 Charity of the Month - S6 Foodbank

Lizzie Read

As those of you who have been around for a while may remember, every June I select a charity to support by donating 10% of my takings that month.  I’m hoping that this year will see my biggest donation yet, as the business continues to grow and I have more time available to take appointments than in previous years. This year I have decided to donate to the S6 Foodbank. This, as every year, was a difficult decision with so many charities needing support. However, with the need for food banks continuing to increase and donations decreasing it seemed an important time to donate to this cause.

What is S6 Foodbank?

S6 is a project founded by local community groups to work towards stopping hunger in the local area. They work to provide three days of nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to people that have been referred to them during times of crisis. They operate as part of the Trussel Trust, a nationwide network of foodbanks, who work on the principle that nobody should go hungry and are working to end poverty and hunger in the UK. The foodbank is run by volunteers who work to collect, pack and distribute food.

More Than Food

The support extends beyond food; S6 Foodbank also connects people with trained volunteers and external support services to help address the underlying issues behind their crisis. This includes support in; benefits advice, debt advice, housing and homelessness, mental health and well-being and employability,

The impact of S6 Foodbank is profound. By providing immediate relief from hunger, it helps alleviate some of the stress and anxiety that comes with financial hardship. This vital support enables people to focus on other aspects of their lives, such as finding employment or managing health issues, without the constant worry of where their next meal will come from.

How You Can Help

Supporting S6 Foodbank can be done in several ways, each making a significant difference:

  1. Donations: Non-perishable food items such as canned goods, pasta, rice, and cereals are always in demand. You can drop off donations at various collection points across Sheffield or directly at the foodbank.

  2. Financial Contributions: Monetary donations are crucial as they allow the foodbank to purchase items in bulk, cover operational costs, and respond flexibly to urgent needs. You can donate via their website.

  3. Volunteering: Volunteering your time can be incredibly rewarding. Whether it's sorting food, packing parcels, or distributing them, your help can make a substantial impact.

  4. Fundraising: Organize or participate in fundraising events. This could be anything from bake sales to sponsored runs, helping to raise awareness and funds for the foodbank.

The work of S6 Foodbank has never been more critical. The ongoing cost of living crisis has exacerbated the financial strain on many households. Rising prices for essentials such as food, energy, and housing mean that more people than ever are turning to foodbanks for support. At the same time, foodbanks across the country, including S6 Foodbank, are facing a decline in donations. The increased demand paired with fewer contributions creates a challenging environment for these vital services.

As well as making a monetary donation, throughout June I will be accepting non-perishable food donations in clinic if you wish to leave something with me to take to S6.

Thank you, for your amazing support
